Care Instructions
Taking proper care of your wood cutting boards is critical to getting the longest life out of them. Wood is a beautiful, natural material that will provide an instant and significant upgrade over plastic to prepare your foods. However, wood is also prone to move, crack and warp - with moisture and temperature changes especially. You can avoid these issues by taking a few minutes to read and follow our care instructions below:
Washing After Use:
- Your walnut cutting boards should never be placed in a dishwasher, please hand wash only!
- When hand washing, use mild dish soaps and scrub with a sponge. We recommend rinsing both sides of your board, even if you only used one, to keep moisture levels as consistent as possible through the wood.
- Hand dry with a paper towel or dish rag and leave the board out to continue to air dry. When air drying, remember to put on a drying rack or stand upright to allow air flow on all sides and avoid any portion of the board standing in pooling water.
Applying Oil:
- At regular intervals or after frequent heavy use, a conditioning oil should be applied to your board. Once every month or so with regular use is a good rule of thumb. The oil will prevent your board from drying out and cracking and instead keep it at a healthy moisture level.
- Before your cutting board is shipped to you, it receives 3 coats of Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil (available online), and 1 coat of wood wax from the same company. We recommend this product for maintenance as well, though other versions are available at your local home goods store.
- After use and once thoroughly dried, apply a thin coat of cutting board oil on all surfaces of the cutting board. Allow the oil to soak into the wood for 12-24 hours and then wipe away any excess with a paper towel.
- Finally, with a clean paper towel, apply a layer of wood wax to all surfaces of your cutting board. After 15 minutes, wipe away any excess. Your cutting board will be refreshed and ready for action!
